New Councilor - Mansa Musa (Royalty)
After Mansa Musa rose to power in the early 1300s he started preparing for his hajj, or pilgrimage to Mecca, and in 1324 the long journey began. During his journey, he would dress his detachment in silk and gold and he often donated lavish gifts to the people in the cities he visited along the way. It is said that Musa conquered two influential cities along the route home, although there is dispute that a group of returning pilgrims could capture a powerful city at all. During his homecoming they convinced poets and scholars to return with them for the betterment of Mali. Once Mansa Musa returned he began many large construction projects and started emphasizing trade and education. Thanks to his recent extravagant pilgrimage, surrounding regions began to prioritize the Mali empire to trade manufactured goods in exchange for gold.
